Job Purpose
Primarily responsible for engineering, design, implementation, integration, and troubleshooting support for telecommunications and data network systems involving electric transmission, distribution, sub-transmission, metering and other grid modernization technologies. The Telecom Engineering - NE Department is focused on providing telecom solutions that would meet the needs of our capital projects and our Grid Modernization Plan. Our team culture is self-directed and empowered. Team members work on a wide range of projects; taking innovative concepts/ visions and making them a reality. We are hiring engineers for projects in our NE jurisdiction.

Key Accountabilities
Participate in specification, design, and implementation of innovative communications and networking technologies for the electric transmission and distribution systems

Evaluate emerging technologies; participate in equipment specification and selection; perform end-to-end solution design including validation and testing of advanced communications systems

W ork with engineering groups - Substation, Protection, Control & Integration, Distribution Control & Instrumentation, Meter, and Distribution Standards to provide communications solutions for projects assigned to those groups

Develop long-term strategies for field area networking supporting controls, monitors, meters and other fixed and mobile devices

  • Support Company Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI) initiatives in all New England jurisdictions including the design and deployment of Field Area Networks (FAN) and their monitoring and control systems
  • Engage our IS and external communications partners in the development of end to end communications solutions for operational SCADA, metering, Volt Var Optimization (VVO) and other active and future projects
  • Work with SCADA/EMS team to integrate control systems and communications technologies into various applications
  • Support Grid Modernization initiatives for innovation and modernization of our energy delivery infrastructure such as the MA Grid Modernization
  • Create and obtain approval for special projects, engineering design, analysis and investigations, and training to deploy new technologies and work practices
  • Support strategic program development and execution associated with system operations, planning or asset management and provide detailed technical knowledge as required in support of company operations
  • Develop documentation and provide technical guidance, support and coaching to others in order to share knowledge and develop technical understanding
  • Support storm restoration efforts
    Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
    • Able to motivate, counsel, coach, and develop direct reports and others.
    • Experience establishing clearly defined goals and standards of employee performance.

      Qualifications
      • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Telecommunications/Network Engineering or associated disciplines from an accredited engineering school with at least 10 years of related experience in a number of technical roles.
      • Experience creating new ways to plan and operate communication systems using advanced analytics and emerging technologies and industry trends.
      • Expertise in some or all of the following communications technologies:
        • RF data communication systems including point to point, point to multipoint and mesh topologies.
        • Private and public LTE networks
        • Fiber optic and microwave transport systems
        • Leased wired and wireless services
        • Computer network routing/switching, cloud services
        • Demonstrated capability to independently develop and direct small teams with regard to project tasks and technical requirements.
        • Solid understanding and use of financial terms along with budgeting principles and practices.
        • Deep understanding of the underlying problems, opportunities, and external political forces affecting the feasibility of technical enhancements in the industry.
        • Skilled in programming, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting communications hardware.
        • Demonstrates strong influencing skills with the ability to make persuasive presentations to small and large audiences.
        • Must be able to work overtime and/or holidays, nights, weekends as needed.
        • Must be able to travel overnight outside the normal work area.

          Salary

          $124,000 - $150,000 a year

          This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
