Department Description: Hours= Full-time (with benefits) Monday -Friday shift TBD Free employee parking available in Chelsea, MA. This position will support the Lab, Radiology, Physical Therapy and Bone Density departments at the BID Chelsea offsite location. This position has dual responsibilities supporting the multi ancillary clinic. The front desk tasks include appointment scheduling/check in, verification of insurance eligibility, copay collection and phone management. Daily communications with the physical therapists and radiology technicians within the clinical area. Additionally, will communicate with the internal primary care/specialty staff/physicians within the BIDMC network. The phlebotomy responsibilities include performing venipunctures, accurately/verifying patients demographic information, specimen labeling/processing, preparing specimens for transport, specimen reconciliation and entry of billing tickets. Responsible for ordering and stocking supplies, maintaining venipuncture stations and performing disinfectant/cleaning process of area. Monitoring the expiration dates of supplies in accordance with the Joint Commission Compliance standards. Job Location: Chelsea, MA Req ID: 35605BR Job Summary: Phlebotomists performs phlebotomy services on all patients at BIDMC. This person obtains patient identification and maintains vein preservation and specimen labeling procedures. A Phlebotomist transports routine and STAT specimens to appropriate laboratories. Department Specific Job Responsibilities: Schedules related diagnostic and lab tests making every reasonable effort to accommodate patient and provider needs. Verifies patient insurance, including prior authorizations, referrals, and pre-certifications. Explains processes as needed to help patients meet their needs and insurance requirements Prepares schedules, patient charts and other documents as needed for clinical activities, in accordance with Medical Center standards. Procures and correlates medical correspondence as directed by department. Performs check-in utilizing a computer system, according to standard processes. This includes but is not limited to registration and verification of demographic and fiscal information, collecting copayments, collecting/verifying health care proxy and providing patients with visit questionnaires s. Use computer system to record whether appointment was cancelled or patient did not keep the appointment (visit disposition). Monitors patients and visitors entering, waiting, and leaving the practice. Facilitates timely flow and informs patients and providers of delays in a timely manner. Acts as liaison between patient and practice staff to ensure optimal flow and service delivery. Ensures waiting room materials are organized and stocked as directed by the department. May answer and screen telephone calls.Essential Responsibilities: Perform venipunctures, including blood culture collection, and fingersticks ensuring proper ID/labeling of specimens and using vein preservation techniques. Perform and report bleeding times according to standard operating procedures. Ensure adequate stocking of supplies and report needs to phlebotomy leaders. Transports specimen from site of collection to site of testing. Participates in laboratory programs for QA, competency, mandatory training and continuing education. Records blood drawing volume used as productivity measures. Documents the time of arrival and departure for each scheduled round. Ensures maintenance for equipment and surrounding area. Compiles patient test information into computer databaseRequired Qualifications: High School diploma or GED required. Registration ASCP Registered preferred., and Certificate 1 NCA Certification preferred. 0-1 years related work experience required. Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.Competencies: Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures which generally require little or no supervision. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements. Independence of Action: Ability to follow general instructions and procedures as provided. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager. Written Communications: Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions. Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required. Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Physical Nature of the Job: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
