Job Description:
The Shen Lab, a molecular neurobiology laboratory at Brigham and
Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, seeks a Technical
Research Assistant (TRA) to participate in exciting research on
elucidating mechanisms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases
using genetic approaches. This is an opportunity for someone
looking to work in a rigorous academic research setting on projects
that may lead to novel therapeutic treatments for these
neurodegenerative diseases. This position is ideal for recent
college graduates looking to expand their knowledge and experience
before pursuing a graduate program. Opportunities for hands on
experiments include PCR, RT-PCR, Western blotting, Northern
blotting, cell culture, histology, microscopy, mouse and fly brain
dissection, stereotaxic injection, mouse behavioral testing, and
mouse colony maintenance. Our research assistants are encouraged to
participate in all scientific aspects of the lab and are provided
training and mentorship to help them achieve their career goals.
Previous candidates for this position have had the opportunity to
conduct their own research experiments and contribute to ongoing
research projects in a meaningful way, resulting in co-authorship
on published papers.
The TRA should be able to work collaboratively and independently
after initial training period, and will follow hospital and
departmental policies and procedures. Compensation will be generous
and based on experiences and qualifications.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
QUALIFICATIONS:
BS in a biological/physical science required.
Prior coursework in genetics and molecular biology preferred.
Experience working with mice desired.
Candidates should have 1-2 years of experience in a research
setting, such as performing PCR, Western blotting and/or
immunohistochemistry.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
WORKING CONDITIONS:
TRA will be working in a normal laboratory environment. TRA will be
working with Drosophila (fly) or mice, and may be exposed to a
variety of chemicals. Light lifting and bending required, as well
as some computer/desk work.
