Job Description:

The state operated Veterans Home at Chelsea is an independent state agency consisting of long-term care and a domiciliary which are independent living quarters for our veterans. The care and services provided by the Veterans' Homes are supported by an extraordinary group of staff working to meet the needs of our veterans. The ideal incumbent's role will be toassist with planning and organizing recreational activities through resident participation in individual and/or group leisure activities in accordance with their needs and capabilities. * *DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Motivates residents to participate in recreation activities for those functioning at various levels of impairment. 2. Maintains attendance records of patient participation in activities. 3. Assists with planning, organizing and running daily activities; supervises group activities, such asbingo, musical entertainment, movies, reminiscence groups. 4. Provides 1-1 visits to clients at bedside, in unit, as well as outdoors. 5. Assists with purchasing of activity supplies, decorations and paper goods and other supplies as needed 6. Works with family members, veterans, and civic organizations at various recreation activities. 7. Assists with record keeping and accounting of activity expenditures. 8. Reports and discusses observations of patient participation in activities to supervisor as part of interdisciplinaryprocess. 10. Maintains CPR certification. 11. Transports patients to activities while promoting a safe environment. 12. Performs related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE: 1. Ability to work with adult and geriatric veteran population. 2. Knowledge of regulations, policies and procedures related to activity programs. 3. Ability to work with volunteers, veterans and civic organizations and those assigned to resident detail. QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB: 1. Ability to assist supervisor to coordinate programs in order to enlist and provide sponsors, volunteers, 2. Ability to train, direct and supervise volunteers. 3. Ability to prepare activity reports, log patient participation and expenditures, and distribute flyers and memos as needed. 4. Ability to discuss and evaluate patient performance. 5. Knowledge of regulations, policies and procedures related to activity programs. 6. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
