SCHEDULE: Saturday & Sunday 9:00am 5:30pm

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Residential Counselor will assist the Veterans to access the services we provide, particularly those relating to food, clothing, medical care, and referral needs, as well as ensuring their safety and security. Daily tasks will include: answering phones, recording appropriate log notes, receive and route Veterans messages. Respond to e-mail communications in an appropriate timely fashion. Actively participate in trainings that are required by all Pine Street Inn direct care staff. At all times counselors are required to treat all residents/guests/program participants fairly, with respect and dignity. At all times counselors are required to appear alert and approachable.

REQUIREMENTS:

* High school diploma OR equivalent certification with 6 months of experience working with persons who are mentally ill * Minimum of one (1) year of experience in Human Services environment * Basic computer knowledge and data entry skills * Ability to communicate verbally and by written means * Ability to stand for long periods of time * Ability to stretch, bend, and lift 50lbs. * Ability to assist residents up and down stairs during difficult/emergency situations * Ability to respond safely and quickly to emergency situations * Ability to talk/listen with/to people, in a non-judgmental way * Ability to perform an array of difficult tasks at the same time * Temperament to work with residents/participants with problems indicative of untreated emotional and active substance abuse behavior * Ability to work with a diverse staff and client population * Ability to work in intense situations

PREFERRED:

* CPR certification and first aid certified * Bilingual * Knowledge of addictions and mental illness * Knowledge of issues pertaining to the homeless * Proven interpersonal, communication and organizational skills

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

* Monitor the building for safety/security hazards and ensure that the facility, including the surroundings, is safe for Veterans, staff and all individuals who work in/access our facility. * Ensure all entrances are secure; making sure all walkways and wheelchair ramp are accessible during inclement weather * Monitor various operations: rooms, kitchen operations; ensure that all who enter are allowed to enter and follow required sign in protocol. * Oversee compliance with the occupancy agreements and house rules. Monitor tenants and tenants guests who are awake and active in the house. Make regular rounds through the building to ensure all entrances are secure. Act to ensure a safe and comfortable living environment. * Assist Veterans in understanding how the services are provided: explaining procedures, answering questions, explaining rights and/or recourse to grievances

* Address inappropriate behavior through the use of proper judgment, set rules, regulations and guidelines

* Document all hazards/incidents and intervene appropriately in unsafe situation.

* Assess and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Use emergency phone tree, and complete incident reports as necessary.

* Advise the Clinical supervisor regarding matters of concern or policy; Confer regularly with other program staff * Work to foster and maintain an atmosphere of teamwork; set a tone of respect and support for all participants in the program

* Encourage participants to be responsible neighbors * Develop and foster professional relationship with all Veterans

* Make appropriate log note in reference to Veterans issues; communicate any observed issues via the log and verbal. * Participate in relevant meetings, training sessions and programs as assigned and/or required

* Perform other additional assignments or projects as requested/directed by supervisor * Work with other staff to help prepare occasional meals and holiday celebrations * Touch base regularly with individual program participants reports * Maintain necessary records in a timely fashion
