Job Description:
Description The state operated veterans' homes are independent
state agencies that organizationally report to the Secretary of the
Executive Office of Veterans' Services (EOVS). The Veterans' Homes
are owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and
address the needs of a wide variety of veterans, including long
term care and domiciliary services meeting the veteran residents'
care and psychosocial needs. The care and services provided by the
Veterans' Homes are supported by a staff of approximately 450;
representing physicians, advanced practice clinicians, nurses,
aides, social workers, recreation therapist, physical and
occupational therapy, speech language pathology, educators,
building trades, dietary, housekeeping, managers, support staff,
consultants and contractors. The tradition of service to the
veterans of Massachusetts is surpassed only by a continued
commitment to excellence in care for those who are in need now and
in the future.
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assign, direct, reviews, evaluates, instructs and monitors
activities staff as they provide recreational, social,
intellectual, emotional and spiritual activities to residents.
Develops, implements, and monitors recreation therapy care plans
and individual resident assessments.
Develops and implements the therapeutic recreation program
individualized for each resident
Develops and maintains the recreation therapy calendar. Ensures
that all progress notes are informative and descriptive of the
services provided and of the resident's response to the services
and programs.
Participates in the ongoing quality assurance program.
Train and supervise volunteers and prepare their individual
assignments.
Participates in developed individual and group participant
physical, mental, social, psychosocial, interest and other activity
programs and procedures. Maintains special attention toward
residents due to the unpredictable and changeable behavior of unit
participants. Sets up, coordinates, administers and participates in
various individual and/or group exercises, instructional games,
entertainment, field trips, outings and other activities
appropriate to the needs and individualized and collective needs
and interests of the residents. Programming include but are not
limited to: exercises, unit and other decorating, instructional and
board games. Cards, bingo, puzzles, arts and crafts, entertainment,
field trips, outings, movies and shows, hand-eye coordination.
Ensure residents are fed, toileted, positioned and moved as
required.
Posting in a conspicuous place a monthly calendar of programming
and events
Collaborates with the Director in developing staffing needs and in
the preparation of work schedules.
Makes daily and periodic rounds to observe residents and staff; to
determine if recreation therapy and engagement needs are being met
in accordance with the residents' requests, care plans and
assessments and other established criteria. Review staff notes,
resident charts and other documentation to assure compliance with
informative and descriptive narration requirements and resident
needs.
Collaborates with nursing, social services, nursing managers and
others as may be required to meet needs of residents.
Maintains liaison and open lines of communication with other
facility departments/personnel.
Attends and/or participates in staff, unit, department and other
meetings, conferences, on committees, task forces.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills,
abilities)
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Experience with the bidding and awarding of contracts
Ability to interact effectively with different business
departments, team members.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse
groups.
Strong computer, administrative and software utilization skills (MS
Outlook, Word and Excel).
Strong communication skills, written and oral; ability to write
concisely, to express thoughts clearly, and to develop ideas in
logical sequence
Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of data, to draw
conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
Ability to maintain accurate and organized records and create
reports
Ability to supervise, to include planning and assigning work
according to the nature of the job being accomplished; ability to
coordinate the efforts of others in accomplishing assigned
duties.
Strong computer, administrative and software utilization sills
Ability to deal tactfully with others
Ability to develop and maintain harmonious relationships with
others.
QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB (List knowledges, skills,
abilities)
Knowledge of dementia and its effects on clients and families
Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures,
specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit
activities.
Knowledge of the organizational structure and functions of the
agency.
Knowledge of veterans' service programs
Knowledge of the types and users of agency forms.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A)
two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional,
administrative or managerial experience in business administration,
business management or public administration the major duties of
which involved program management, program administration, program
coordination, program planning and/or program analysis, or (B) any
equivalent combination of the required experience and the
substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in business
administration, business management or public administration may be
substituted for the required experience.*
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in
business administration, business management or public
administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the
required experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of
the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
